Overview
Nestled in the heart of George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Museum Hotel offers an immersive journey into the past. Housed in a meticulously restored 1929 colonial building, the hotel invites guests to relive the grandeur of Penang’s storied history. Located on a tranquil lane a short walk from Penang Road, the hotel is a stone’s throw from vibrant cultural hubs, local eateries, and iconic landmarks such as Cheong Fatt Tze’s Blue Mansion and Little India.
The hotel’s architecture and interiors resonate with the elegance of the colonial era. Its nine interconnected terraces brim with antique furniture and artefacts that evoke the charm of yesteryears. Each room combines old-world allure with contemporary comforts, featuring high-thread-count cotton linens, air conditioning, and modern amenities like flat-screen televisions with a selection of local and international tv channels as well as 15 radio channels.
Guests can also enjoy a cooling dip in the shallow courtyard pool, perfect for relaxing after a day of exploration.

A Neighbourhood Steeped in History

The Museum Hotel is located just off Transfer Road, a street that reflects the fascinating layers of George Town’s colonial and cultural narratives. Transfer Road derives its name from the transfer of the Straits Settlements in 1867 from the Government of British India to the Colonial Office in London. Locally known in Hokkien as “the street by Tek Soon’s house”, the area was once home to early Jawi Peranakan communities—descendants of Indian Muslim men and Malay women.
During the 19th century
Transfer Road was a vital trading hub, with a canal known as Titi Papan connecting it to the Prangin River. This allowed boats to dock, turning the neighbourhood into a bustling market area.
In the mid-20th century
Transfer Road became a hotspot for accommodations, hosting iconic hotels like the Embassy Hotel and Hong Aun Hotel. Today, the street’s vibrant mix of heritage buildings and modern establishments reflects its storied past.
Dining at The Boomers
Within the hotel, The Boomers Hainanese Western Restaurant offers a distinctive fusion of Hainanese and Western culinary traditions. This dining experience pays homage to the heritage of Hainanese chefs in Malaysia, who blended local ingredients with Western techniques during the British colonial era.
Signature dishes include the Classic Pot Pie, Hainanese Chicken Chop, and a unique twist on traditional Fish and Chips. Guests can enjoy these meals in a charming setting adorned with historical décor and tasteful oldies music.
